Meta Platforms Inc’s (NASDAQ:META) Threads is introducing a “Recent” filter for sorting search results by the most recent posts, as revealed by Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, on Monday. 

This new feature is part of a “limited test” currently available to a select group of users. 

The initiative aims to facilitate users’ finding relevant search outcomes in real-time, addressing the need for timely and up-to-date content, TechCrunch reports.

A participant in this test shared that the search results now feature “Top” and “Recent” filters. The latter is not strictly chronological but offers a more relevant alternative for accessing the latest posts than the “Top” filter.

The introduction of this feature follows an accidental deployment earlier in the year, where Threads momentarily allowed users to sort search results based on recency. 

At the time, Meta described it as an “internal prototype” that was mistakenly made accessible to a limited audience.

Mosseri previously expressed concerns over implementing a real-time search feature despite the potential benefits, highlighting the risk of creating a “safety loophole.” 

He explained that spammers and malicious actors could easily exploit a chronological listing of every post containing specific words or tags, thereby cluttering the platform with undesirable content. 

Recently, Meta declared it would shut down its Threads service in Turkey on April 29 due to a provisional directive by the Turkish Competition Authority (TCA). Meta’s introduction of Threads to the European Union has been postponed, impacted by the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which has placed new regulatory pressures on Meta and similar tech giants.
